God of all creation,
you have opened the gates of heaven to your children,
born anew of water and the Spirit.
May the grace of baptism bear abundant fruit within them,
freeing them from all sin
and bringing them to the eternal life you have promised.

โ–ฅ A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 7:51—8:1a
Stephen said to the people, the elders, and the scribes:
"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears,
you always oppose the Holy Spirit;
you are just like your ancestors.
Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute?
They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one,
whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
You received the law as transmitted by angels,
but you did not observe it."
When they heard this, they were infuriated,
and they ground their teeth at him.
But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit,
looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God
and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
and Stephen said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened
and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."
But they cried out in a loud voice,
covered their ears, and rushed upon him together.
They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.
The witnesses laid down their cloaks
at the feet of a young man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out,
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice,
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them";
and when he said this, he fell asleep.
Now Saul was consenting to his execution.

He gave them bread from heaven to eat."

it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven;
my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world."
So they said to Jesus,
"Sir, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst."

์˜ค๋Š˜์˜ ๋ฌต์ƒ Today's Meditation

Today's Gospel and readings are a continuation of yesterday's text.
The crowd, even after experiencing the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, asks for a sign again. "What sign will you do so that we can see and believe in you?"
When will we stop "demanding signs"? Jesus is compared to Moses. Just as Moses gave manna by showing a sign, the crowd wants Jesus to show a similar sign. However, this comparison stems from the crowd's misunderstanding of Jesus' identity. He is not to be compared to Moses; He is the Son of God.
To address this, Jesus explains his relationship with God. "It was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven... The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." "I am the bread of life."
The Gospel of John chooses a different approach to this declaration than the other synoptic Gospels. While the synoptic Gospels present the feeding of the five thousand as a decisive sign and conclude the story there, John's Gospel includes a long discourse on the bread of life after the miracle. This allows for a gradual deepening of the theme. First, Jesus shows the sign of multiplying the bread, then he teaches about seeking imperishable food, and finally he declares, "I am the bread of life."
"Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." The adverb "never" is repeated twice. This emphasis on never going hungry or thirsty highlights that this is not a mere consolation but a promise to be experienced in reality. Only with this living experience can our faith be nourished by the "bread of life" and lead to a life of true life.
