< And they were unable to withstand the wisdom
and the Spirit with which he was speaking. > 

▥ A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 6:8-15
Stephen, filled with grace and power,
was working great wonders and signs among the people.
Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen,
Cyreneans, and Alexandrians,
and people from Cilicia and Asia,
came forward and debated with Stephen,
but they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.
Then they instigated some men to say,
“We have heard him speaking blasphemous words
against Moses and God.”
They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes,
accosted him, seized him,
and brought him before the Sanhedrin.
They presented false witnesses who testified,
“This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law.
For we have heard him claim
that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place
and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”
All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him
and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

✠ The Holy Gospel according to John. Jn 6:22-29
After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.
The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea
saw that there had been only one boat there,
and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat,
but only his disciples had left.
Other boats came from Tiberias
near the place where they had eaten the bread
when the Lord gave thanks.
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there,
they themselves got into boats
and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
And when they found him across the sea they said to him,
“Rabbi, when did you get here?”
Jesus answered them and said,
“Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me
not because you saw signs
but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
Do not work for food that perishes
but for the food that endures for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you.
For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.”
So they said to him,
“What can we do to accomplish the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them,
“This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.”

It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God.
But on this night, above all nights,
we are bound to praise you with joy and gladness,
for on this night Christ our Passover has been sacrificed.
He is the true Lamb who has taken away the sins of the world.
By his death he has destroyed our death,
and by his rising to life he has restored us to life.
Therefore, the whole world exults in gladness,
and the choirs of angels sing in heaven.
The redeemed rejoice on earth,
and all creation is radiant
with the splendor of your glory.

오늘의 묵상 Today's Meditation

After feeding the crowd of over five thousand, Jesus and his disciples crossed the lake to find the crowd who had followed them there. The first part of the gospel emphasizes the theme of "seeking." The long description depicts the crowd moving here and there to find Jesus. Finally, they find him, and Jesus acknowledges their eager search.
However, he points out that they were seeking him "because you ate your fill of the loaves," and he urges them to "strive not for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life." The contrast is drawn between "perishable food" and "food that brings eternal life," and between "do not strive" and "strive." When the people ask, "What must we do?" Jesus answers, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." Here again, "doing" and "believing" are contrasted. It is more important to believe in him than to seek out things to do.
Today's gospel message clearly reveals the essential nature of faith more than ever before. Faith begins with seeking. Like the crowd in the gospel, ourの姿 is also one of seeking and seeking Jesus. However, if the purpose of that search is to obtain "perishable things," then faith becomes nothing more than a noble means to achieve our own desires. Jesus tells us "not to strive" for this purpose. And he teaches us that believing in him must come first before anything else.
The church can be active and show its vitality by doing many things. However, now the church, each parish, and ourselves must strive first and foremost to believe in the living Jesus. That is the true faith we must seek.
