▥ A reading from the Acts of the Apostles . Acts 8:1b-8
There broke out a severe persecution of the Church in Jerusalem,
and all were scattered
throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria,
except the Apostles.
Devout men buried Stephen and made a loud lament over him.
Saul, meanwhile, was trying to destroy the Church;
entering house after house and dragging out men and women,
he handed them over for imprisonment.
Now those who had been scattered went about preaching the word.
Thus Philip went down to the city of Samaria
and proclaimed the Christ to them.
With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip
when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing.
For unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice,
came out of many possessed people,
and many paralyzed and crippled people were cured.
There was great joy in that city.

오늘의 묵상  Today's Meditation

“I did not come down from heaven to do my own will but to do the will of him who sent me.” What exactly is God’s will? Today’s gospel declares that it is “to lose not one of those who believe in you but to gain eternal life.” The Hebrew word ‘olam,’ translated as ‘eternal,’ does not simply mean a temporal concept connected to the future, but rather refers to the fullness that is realized in any situation or space. Ultimately, to gain eternal life means to live here and now in fullness, and this is precisely God’s will. It is for this reason that Jesus, the “bread of life,” came down from heaven, as declared in this passage.

It was the ‘apostles’ who moved us to experience this fullness. Acts 6 tells the story of the problems that arose within the community as the church grew, and how seven deacons were chosen to solve them. It also tells of the martyrdom of Stephen, one of these deacons. Today’s reading specifically talks about the persecution that began in earnest after Stephen’s funeral. Paradoxically, persecution is not a setback or an end, but rather a declaration that the foundation of the church is being firmly established. The people who were scattered by persecution spread the gospel far and wide, and thus God’s will to lose not one and for everyone to gain eternal life was realized throughout the world.

Is living without adversity, persecution, worry, or conflict what it means to live eternal life? It is rather to live like the apostles, experiencing a wondrous and radiant joy even in the midst of extreme persecution. This fullness is eternal life, and it is eternal life. The expression “not to want to lose” (cf. v. 39) in the gospel is, in other words, “never to abandon” (cf. v. 37). When we know and believe that this is the promise God has made to us, this fullness (eternity) begins here and now. No one is abandoned by God.
