Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me;

Look down upon us in our weakness and weariness.

โ–ฅ This is a word from the book of Isaiah.   Is 42:1-7
Here is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one with whom I am pleased,
Upon whom I have put my Spirit;
he shall bring forth justice to the nations,
Not crying out, not shouting,
not making his voice heard in the street.
A bruised reed he shall not break,
and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,
Until he establishes justice on the earth;

โœ  The Holy Gospel according to JohnJn 12:1-11
Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany,
where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served,
while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.
Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil
made from genuine aromatic nard
and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair;
the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
Then Judas the Iscariot, one of his disciples,
and the one who would betray him, said,
"Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages
and given to the poor?"
He said this not because he cared about the poor
but because he was a thief and held the money bag
and used to steal the contributions.
So Jesus said, "Leave her alone.
Let her keep this for the day of my burial.
You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."
The large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came,
not only because of him, but also to see Lazarus,
whom he had raised from the dead.
And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too,
because many of the Jews were turning away
and believing in Jesus because of him.

์˜ค๋Š˜์˜ ๋ฌต์ƒ  Today's Meditation

The Gospel for today is set in Bethany, six days before the Passover. It tells the story of a feast held in Jesus' honor, at which Mary anoints his feet with expensive perfume.
This event takes place in the shadow of Jesus' impending crucifixion, which makes the details of the feast—the anointing, the perfume, the woman's hair—seem somewhat incongruous. However, the story of Lazarus, who has been dead for "four days" but is raised to life again, foreshadows Jesus' own resurrection, which will take place in six days.
Mary's actions are also symbolically linked to Jesus' crucifixion. When she uses a costly perfume worth 300 denarii (a year's wages) to anoint Jesus' feet, Judas Iscariot objects. He asks, "Why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?" The text, however, makes it clear that Judas is not concerned about the poor, but is rather a thief.
Jesus responds to Judas by saying, "Leave her alone. She has kept this ointment for the day of my burial." In this way, Jesus connects Mary's actions directly to his own death.
The act of pouring out the ointment and anointing Jesus' feet is connected to Jesus' own act of pouring out his "blood and water" to "wash away the sins of the world." Just as the fragrance of the ointment filled the house, so too will the smell of Jesus' blood fill the area around the cross.
And just as Mary anointed Jesus' feet, so too will Jesus soon wash the feet of his disciples. As he stooped down to wash Jesus' feet, so too will Jesus stoop down to wash the feet of humanity. He will "not break a bruised reed or snuff a flickering wick," but will "faithfully bring forth justice" and "not grow weary or discouraged" until he has "established justice in the earth."
Finally, as the one who "gave life to the people" and "breathed into them the breath of life," Jesus will now give new breath and life to all people, just as he raised Lazarus from the dead.
