[์ž/Purple] Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent.

์ž…๋‹น์†ก  Introit Antiphon Psalm 31(30):10.16.18

Lord, have mercy on me.
For I am troubled.
Save me from the hands of my enemies and persecutors.
Lord, I have called on you, let me not be put to shame.

๋ณธ๊ธฐ๋„  Collect

Lord,
Forgive our trespasses
And graciously release us from the chains of sin
That we have committed due to our weakness.
Through the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
< or >

God,
In this Lenten season,
You have inspired your Church to imitate the Blessed Virgin Mary
In devoutly meditating on the Passion of Christ.
Through her intercession,
May we faithfully follow the path of your Only Son
And finally receive the full grace of salvation.
Through the Son, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

์ œ 1๋…์„œ   First Reading
< The Lord is like a mighty warrior who stands beside me. >

โ–ฅ This is the word of the Lord to Jeremiah  Jer 20:10-13
I hear the whisperings of many:
“Terror on every side!
Denounce! let us denounce him!”
All those who were my friends
are on the watch for any misstep of mine.
“Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail,
and take our vengeance on him.”
But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion:
my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph.
In their failure they will be put to utter shame,
to lasting, unforgettable confusion.
O LORD of hosts, you who test the just,
who probe mind and heart,
Let me witness the vengeance you take on them,
for to you I have entrusted my cause.
Sing to the LORD,
praise the LORD,
For he has rescued the life of the poor
from the power of the wicked!

The Word of the Lord.
โ—Ž Thanks be to God.

ํ™”๋‹ต์†ก  Responsorial Psalm Psalm 18:2-3a, 3bc-4, 5-6, 7(โ—Ž 7)

โ—Ž In my distress I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice.
โ—‹ I love you, O LORD, my strength,
O LORD, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer. โ—Ž
โ—‹ My God, my rock of refuge,
my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold!
Praised be the LORD, I exclaim,
and I am safe from my enemies. โ—Ž
โ—‹ The breakers of death surged round about me,
     the destroying floods overwhelmed me;
The cords of the nether world enmeshed me,
the snares of death overtook me. โ—Ž
โ—‹ In my distress I called upon the LORD
     and cried out to my God;
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears. โ—Ž

๋ณต์Œ ํ™˜ํ˜ธ์†ก  Alleluia Jn 6:63c, 68c

(โ—Ž Alleluia! Praise to you, Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. )
โ—‹ Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life.
(โ—Ž Alleluia! Praise to you, Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. )

๋ณต์Œ  Gospel
< The Jews tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp. >

โœ  The Holy Gospel according to John.   Jn 10:31-42
The Jews picked up rocks to stone Jesus.
Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father.
For which of these are you trying to stone me?”
The Jews answered him,
“We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy.
You, a man, are making yourself God.”
Jesus answered them,
“Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, ‘You are gods”‘?
If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came,
and Scripture cannot be set aside,
can you say that the one
whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world
blasphemes because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me;
but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me,
believe the works, so that you may realize and understand
that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”
Then they tried again to arrest him;
but he escaped from their power.
He went back across the Jordan
to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained.
Many came to him and said,
“John performed no sign,
but everything John said about this man was true.”
And many there began to believe in him.

The Gospel of the Lord.
โ—Ž Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

์˜ค๋Š˜์˜ ๋ฌต์ƒ  Today's Meditation

As we approach Holy Week, the readings for today present us with the challenging theme of violence. The book of Jeremiah begins with the prophet facing hostility from all around him: "I hear the sound of many people... All my close friends are waiting for me to fall." The Gospel also begins with tension and unease: "The Jews picked up stones to throw at him." This is because Jesus had just said, "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).
Amidst the provocation and threat, Jesus asks, "Why are you about to stone me?" The Jews respond, "Because you, a mere man, claim to be God." The word "blasphemy" is used here, which in Greek means "blasphemia," referring to an act that dishonors or insults someone's reputation. The question then becomes whether Jesus has indeed dishonored or insulted God. However, Jesus argues that all his miracles and teachings have been a testimony to and a revelation of the Father. The events that disturbed the privileged class of Israel were made possible because "the Father is in me and I am in the Father."
Those who cannot accept newness often fail to control their anger and resort to violence. When logic fails, they resort to physical abuse and violence. We are no different. We may be living with our hands clenched, ready to throw stones at someone. However, it is now time to quietlyๆ”พไธ‹the stones we have been holding onto. Holy Week is approaching.
