[์ž/Purple] Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent.

์ž…๋‹น์†ก  Introit Antiphon  Hebrews 9:15

Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant,

so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance,

now that he has died to redeem them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

๋ณธ๊ธฐ๋„  Collect

Lord,
Graciously protect us who yearn for your mercy.
Cleanse us from our filthy sins
and help us live holy lives to receive the eternal inheritance.
Through the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

์ œ 1๋…์„œ  First Reading
< You will be the father of many nations. >

โ–ฅ The Word of God from Genesis.  Gn 17:3-9
When Abram prostrated himself, God spoke to him:
“My covenant with you is this:
you are to become the father of a host of nations.
No longer shall you be called Abram;
your name shall be Abraham,
for I am making you the father of a host of nations.
I will render you exceedingly fertile;
I will make nations of you;
kings shall stem from you.
I will maintain my covenant with you
and your descendants after you
throughout the ages as an everlasting pact,
to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
I will give to you
and to your descendants after you
the land in which you are now staying,
the whole land of Canaan, as a permanent possession;
and I will be their God.”
God also said to Abraham:
“On your part, you and your descendants after you
must keep my covenant throughout the ages.”

The Word of the Lord.
โ—Ž Thanks be to God.

ํ™”๋‹ต์†ก  Responsorial Psalm Psalm 105:4-5, 6-7, 8-9(8a)

โ—Ž The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
โ—‹ Look to the LORD in his strength;
     seek to serve him constantly.
     Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
     his portents, and the judgments he has uttered. โ—Ž
โ—‹ You descendants of Abraham, his servants,
     sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
     He, the LORD, is our God;
     throughout the earth his judgments prevail. โ—Ž
โ—‹ He remembers forever his covenant
     which he made binding for a thousand generations –
     Which he entered into with Abraham
     and by his oath to Isaac. โ—Ž

๋ณต์Œ ํ™˜ํ˜ธ์†ก  Alleluia  Ps 95:8

(โ—Ž Alleluia! Praise to you, Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. )
โ—‹ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
(โ—Ž Alleluia! Praise to you, Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. )

๋ณต์Œ  Gospel
< Your ancestor Abraham rejoiced to see my day ; he saw it and was glad. >

โœ  The Holy Gospel according to John.  Jn 8:51-59
Jesus said to the Jews:
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever keeps my word will never see death.”
So the Jews said to him,
“Now we are sure that you are possessed.
Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say,
‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died?
Or the prophets, who died?
Who do you make yourself out to be?”
Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing;
but it is my Father who glorifies me,
of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
You do not know him, but I know him.
And if I should say that I do not know him,
I would be like you a liar.
But I do know him and I keep his word.
Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day;
he saw it and was glad.”
So the Jews said to him,
“You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?”
Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
before Abraham came to be, I AM.”
So they picked up stones to throw at him;
but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.

Father most holy, almighty and everlasting God,

์˜ค๋Š˜์˜ ๋ฌต์ƒ  Today's Meditation

As Holy Week draws near, today's readings and Gospel focus on the theme of "covenant." The reading recounts the covenant God made with Abraham, while the Gospel speaks of the new covenant to be fulfilled through Jesus.
By promising Abraham, "I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you," God makes it clear that this covenant will extend to future generations. The outcome of this covenant is the promise of "many descendants" and "the land."
Meanwhile, Jesus declares, "Whoever keeps my word will never see death," promising "eternal life" as the fruit of the new covenant. While the old covenant offered numerous offspring and land, the new covenant is a renewal offering eternal life. However, this declaration immediately provokes opposition from the Jews. They question, "Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say, ‘Anyone who keeps my word will never taste death’? Are you greater than our father Abraham?"
Jesus responds, "Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad." He asserts his superiority over Abraham and proclaims that a far more significant and powerful covenant than the one made with Abraham is about to be established.
This "newness" provokes the Jews to anger and madness. They take up stones to throw at Jesus, but he evades their attack and leaves the temple. Ultimately, he offers his own flesh and blood as the sacrifice of the new covenant on the cross, through which we will receive eternal life.
