[ 백/White ] Memorial of Saint Benedict, abbot.

Saint Benedict, the "Father of Western Monasticism"
Born around 480 AD in Nursia, Umbria, Italy, Saint Benedict embarked on his spiritual journey in Rome, pursuing higher education. However, his heart yearned for a life dedicated to God, leading him to embrace a life of solitude, prayer, and austerity as a hermit in Subiaco for three years.
News of Benedict's holiness spread, attracting numerous followers seeking his guidance. In response, he established a monastery and composed the "Rule of Benedict," a set of guidelines for monastic living that emphasized balance, moderation, and community. This influential rule became the foundation for Western monasticism, earning Benedict the title "Father of Western Monasticism."
Around 547 AD, Saint Benedict passed away at Monte Cassino, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and guide monastics worldwide. Since the late 8th century, his feast day has been celebrated on July 11th in various regions. In 1964, Pope Paul VI proclaimed Saint Benedict as the patron saint of Europe.

입당송  Introit Antiphon

Saint Benedict, blessed as his name implies,
Embraced a life of sanctity, divinely wise.
Leaving behind family, wealth, and worldly ties,
He sought God's favor, beneath monastic skies.

본기도 Collect

God.
He made the blessed Saint Benedict, abbot.
an excellent teacher
You taught me to serve God
We only love God
Let him live free to follow

제 1독서 First Reading
< My heart is crushed. >

This is a word from the Book of Hosea. Hos 11:1-4, 8e-9
Thus says the LORD:
When Israel was a child I loved him,
out of Egypt I called my son.
The more I called them,
the farther they went from me,
Sacrificing to the Baals
and burning incense to idols.
Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
who took them in my arms;
I drew them with human cords,
with bands of love;
I fostered them like one
who raises an infant to his cheeks;
Yet, though I stooped to feed my child,
they did not know that I was their healer.
My heart is overwhelmed,
my pity is stirred.
I will not give vent to my blazing anger,
I will not destroy Ephraim again;
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One present among you;
I will not let the flames consume you.

The Word of the Lord.
◎ Thanks be to God.

○ O shepherd of Israel, hearken.
    From your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
    Rouse your power.◎
○ Once again, O LORD of hosts,
    look down from heaven, and see:
    Take care of this vine,
    and protect what your right hand has planted,
    the son of man whom you yourself made strong.◎

복음 Gospel
< Freely you have received, freely give. >

The Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Mt 10:7-15
Jesus said to his Apostles:
“As you go, make this proclamation:
‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse the lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.
Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
no sack for the journey, or a second tunic,
or sandals, or walking stick.
The laborer deserves his keep.
Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it,
and stay there until you leave.
As you enter a house, wish it peace.
If the house is worthy,
let your peace come upon it;
if not, let your peace return to you.
Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words—
go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.
Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable
for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment
than for that town.”

The Gospel of the Lord.
◎ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

< Alternatively, the readings for the commemoration (Proverbs 2:1-9)

and the gospel (Matthew 19:27-29) can be read. >

예물 기도 Prayer over the Gifts

O Lord,
As we offer this holy sacrifice in honor
of Saint Benedict,
we humbly pray that you will look
with favor upon us.
May we be inspired by his example to seek
and serve you alone.
May we experience the unity
and peace that you give.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

O Lord,
Having received the pledge of
eternal life in the Eucharist,
we humbly beseech you,
that we may follow the teachings
of Saint Benedict faithfully,
and love our brothers and sisters
with all our hearts.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

오늘의 묵상 Today's Meditation

"Do Not Take Anything With You." It's a repeated expression in today's Gospel. Why did Jesus require his disciples to have a life of nothing? From a rational point of view, it is necessary to travel money, travel packages, change of clothes, shoes, walking sticks, and so on. Let's take a look at the text of the gospel again today? "Go and declare, 'Heaven is near.' Heal those who suffer, and wake up those who die. Clean up leprosy patients and drive out demons. Give it to me for nothing, for you have received it for nothing." These words are the key to understanding the gospel of today. The disciples have already received overflowing grace from Jesus. The proclamation of God's country, the miraculous power to cure the sick and to raise the dead, and the mystery of expelling the devil and expressing God's power, all of which Jesus already has. Jesus gave his disciples the "power of God" that you had. So they don't have to own anything anymore.
One of the temptations that comes easily when you work in church is the arrogance of trying to do God's work with only the abilities you have. However, as shown in today's Gospel, when Jesus, our Lord, gives us his duty, he also gives us a grace that can accomplish it according to God's wishes. Therefore, what is most necessary as a servant of God is the "trust" that I have the grace to accomplish this task with me.
Be a believer in God's power. Let's become believers who pray without stepping on clogs while looking at our abilities to the point where we can be seen vaguely. We are people who accomplish things that cannot be realized by the power of God's grace. Do you have conflicts and wounds with people who volunteer together every time you volunteer? Do you feel that you are not qualified to do this job every time you are called to church? Let's sit in front of the Holy See and think carefully about how we do God's work. The faith in God's power, the faith in prayer, must have disappeared. No matter what work you start, I hope you pray for help first, along with the trust that God has given you grace to accomplish the work. for the power of God appears in this way.
"Do Not Take Anything With You". Amen.
