제 1독서  First Reading
< We are called to be witnesses to the truth. > 

▥ A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 4:13-21
Observing the boldness of Peter and John
and perceiving them to be uneducated, ordinary men,
the leaders, elders, and scribes were amazed,
and they recognized them as the companions of Jesus.
Then when they saw the man who had been cured standing there with them,
they could say nothing in reply.
So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin,
and conferred with one another, saying,
“What are we to do with these men?
Everyone living in Jerusalem knows that a remarkable sign
was done through them, and we cannot deny it.
But so that it may not be spread any further among the people,
let us give them a stern warning
never again to speak to anyone in this name.”
So they called them back
and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
Peter and John, however, said to them in reply,
“Whether it is right in the sight of God
for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges.
It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”
After threatening them further,
they released them,
finding no way to punish them,
on account of the people who were all praising God
for what had happened.

✠ The Holy Gospel according to Mark. Mk 16:9-15
When Jesus had risen, early on the first day of the week,
he appeared first to Mary Magdalene,
out of whom he had driven seven demons.
She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping.
When they heard that he was alive
and had been seen by her, they did not believe.
After this he appeared in another form
to two of them walking along on their way to the country.
They returned and told the others;
but they did not believe them either.
But later, as the Eleven were at table, he appeared to them
and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart
because they had not believed those
who saw him after he had been raised.
He said to them, “Go into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.”

It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God.
But on this night, above all nights,
we are bound to praise you with joy and gladness,
for on this night Christ our Passover has been sacrificed.
He is the true Lamb who has taken away the sins of the world.
By his death he has destroyed our death,
and by his rising to life he has restored us to life.
Therefore, the whole world exults in gladness,
and the choirs of angels sing in heaven.
The redeemed rejoice on earth,
and all creation is radiant
with the splendor of your glory.

The Gospel reading for Saturday in the Octave of Easter provides a comprehensive summary of Jesus' post-resurrection appearances, as described in the Gospels. It presents three distinct encounters, each characterized by the recurring pattern of "appearance" followed by "unbelief."

1. Appearance to Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9-11)
Jesus first appears to Mary Magdalene, but her report is met with disbelief by the other disciples.
2. Appearance to the Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35)
Jesus then appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, yet again, their testimony is not believed.
3. Appearance to the Eleven Disciples (John 20:19-23)
Finally, Jesus manifests himself to the eleven disciples, rebuking them for their unbelief and hardened hearts.

 

The Great Commission: Preaching the Gospel to All Creation
Despite their initial skepticism, Jesus entrusts the disciples with a momentous mission: "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to every creature." This remarkable act of trust empowers the disciples to overcome their doubts and embark on this daunting task.

The Boldness of Peter and John:
The passage highlights the boldness of Peter and John, which astounds those who witness it. This boldness stems from their faith in Jesus' love and trust in them. It represents a fearless confidence that arises from the knowledge of God's unwavering belief in us.

Encountering the Risen Jesus in the Eucharist:
Like the disciples, we encounter the risen Jesus daily through the Eucharist. However, we must question whether we, as believers, are truly free from disbelief and stubbornness.

Faith, Gratitude, and Transformation:
Salvation begins with faith and gratitude for God's love. Only by acknowledging and embracing this love can we liberate ourselves from our hardened hearts. This faith leads us to "parrhesia" (boldness), a steadfast and courageous freedom that allows us to overcome any obstacle.
