[ Red ] Memorial of Saint Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs.

Saint Paul Miki was born around 1564 near Osaka, Japan, as the son of a samurai. After graduating from a Jesuit college, he became a religious brother and fervently preached the Gospel, achieving great success. However, during the persecution under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Brother Paul Miki was arrested along with 25 companions, subjected to severe torture, and taken to Nagasaki, where he was martyred on the cross on February 5, 1597. In 1862, he and his fellow martyrs were canonized.

You have not approached that which could be touched

No, you have approached Mount Zion

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two
and gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick
–no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.
He said to them,
“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

오늘의 묵상  Today's Meditation

When Jesus sent out the Twelve for their mission, He instructed them not to take bread, a travel bag, or money, and not even to wear two tunics. In today’s context, these are essential items for a journey, yet Jesus prohibited them. Perhaps this signifies a call to entrust themselves entirely to the providence of grace.

Saint Augustine interpreted the command about not wearing two tunics as a warning against duplicity, understanding it as an exhortation to have a sincere and simple heart. The only two things allowed were a staff and sandals—both essential for walking. This highlights the effort required to live with the bare minimum, a necessity in fulfilling the missionary calling.

Why did Jesus set such strict conditions when sending out His disciples? It could be to emphasize the importance of focusing on what is essential. In the missionary journey, the priority is not to worry about one’s own needs but to trust in the providence of the One who sends them and to deliver His message while carrying out the work entrusted to them.

Even though some things may be important and necessary, the disciples were called to eliminate all nonessential means, relying instead on the hospitality of those who welcomed them and making use of the resources provided along the way. By maintaining a simple heart and focusing solely on their mission, they were able to drive out many demons and heal many who were sick.

For us today, living in an era of climate crisis caused by extreme weather, what we desperately need is a simple and humble way of life. Before addressing climate issues, embracing simplicity and trust in divine providence can help us refocus on the essence of life and commit to what truly matters.
