▥ This is a word from the Book of Hosea. Hos 8:4-7, 11-13
Thus says the LORD:
They made kings in Israel, but not by my authority;
they established princes, but without my approval.
With their silver and gold they made
idols for themselves, to their own destruction.
Cast away your calf, O Samaria!
my wrath is kindled against them;
How long will they be unable to attain
innocence in Israel?
The work of an artisan,
no god at all,
Destined for the flames—
such is the calf of Samaria!
When they sow the wind,
they shall reap the whirlwind;
The stalk of grain that forms no ear
can yield no flour;
Even if it could,
strangers would swallow it.

A demoniac who could not speak was brought to Jesus,
and when the demon was driven out the mute man spoke.
The crowds were amazed and said,
“Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
But the Pharisees said,
“He drives out demons by the prince of demons.”
Jesus went around to all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues,
proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness.
At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.”

오늘의 묵상 Today's Meditation
In the Gospel of Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus instructs his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest." This seemingly simple instruction carries profound implications for Christian service and our relationship with God.
The Greek word translated as "pray" in this passage, "deēte," encompasses the meanings of "ask," "request," and "petition." It goes beyond mere supplication, emphasizing a deep reverence and dependence on God. Jesus is not calling for a hasty or self-sufficient approach to ministry; rather, he is urging his disciples to recognize their limitations and seek divine assistance through prayer.
One of the common pitfalls among Christian servants is the tendency to engage in ministry without seeking God's guidance and strength through prayer. Prayerless service, while outwardly active, can lead to a gradual loss of connection with God over time. Despite outward appearances of piety, such individuals may become spiritually distant from God, eventually resembling those who claim to know God but lack faith.
The Pharisees in the Gospels exemplify this danger. They were considered the epitome of "zealous believers." Yet, their assessment of Jesus' miracles reveals their spiritual blindness: "This fellow drives out demons by Beelzebub, the prince of demons." Their zeal was accompanied by spiritual blindness, demonstrating the state of those who engage in God's work without genuine faith.
In contrast, Jesus' ministry was characterized by a deep connection with the Father. He "went about from village to village, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness." (Matthew 4:23) Jesus excluded no one, reaching out to all in need of his grace.
Our level of service or theological knowledge does not guarantee that our faith is oriented towards God. He seeks us all. Prayer is the very essence of encountering Jesus. We must ensure that prayer remains an integral part of our lives, regardless of circumstances. Let us prioritize seeking the Lord's guidance before embarking on any endeavor.
"Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest." Amen.
