[ Purple ] Thursday of the Second Week of Lent.

์ž…๋‹น์†ก   Introit     Psalm  139(138):23-24

O God, search me and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

๋ณธ๊ธฐ๋„  Collect

O God,
You who save and love sinners,
Set the fire of the Holy Spirit in our hearts,
So that we may practice love with firm faith.
Through Christ our Lord,
With the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever.
Amen.

์ œ 1๋…์„œ  First Reading
< To trust in humans is futile and leads to ruin,
but to trust in the Lord brings true blessing and prosperity. >

โ–ฅ These are the words of Jeremiah.    Jer 17:5-10
Thus says the LORD:
Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings,
who seeks his strength in flesh,
whose heart turns away from the LORD.
He is like a barren bush in the desert
that enjoys no change of season,
But stands in a lava waste,
a salt and empty earth.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose hope is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
that stretches out its roots to the stream:
It fears not the heat when it comes,
its leaves stay green;
In the year of drought it shows no distress,
but still bears fruit.
More tortuous than all else is the human heart,
beyond remedy; who can understand it?
I, the LORD, alone probe the mind
and test the heart,
To reward everyone according to his ways,
according to the merit of his deeds.

The Word of the Lord.
โ—Ž Thanks be to God.

ํ™”๋‹ต์†ก   Responsorial Psalm      Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6(โ—Ž 40:5a)

โ—Ž Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
โ—‹ Blessed the man who follows not
     the counsel of the wicked
Nor walks in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the company of the insolent,
But delights in the law of the LORD
and meditates on his law day and night. โ—Ž
โ—‹ He is like a tree
     planted near running water,
That yields its fruit in due season,
     and whose leaves never fade.
     Whatever he does, prospers. โ—Ž
โ—‹ Not so, the wicked, not so;
they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
For the LORD watches over the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked vanishes. โ—Ž

๋ณต์Œ ํ™˜ํ˜ธ์†ก   Alleluia     Lk 8:15

( โ—Ž Alleluia! Praise to you, Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. )
โ—‹ Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance.
( โ—Ž Alleluia! Praise to you, Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. )

๋ณต์Œ  Gospel
< My child,
remember that you received what was good during your lifetime
while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. >

โœ  A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.    Lk 16:19-31
Jesus said to the Pharisees:
"There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps
that fell from the rich man's table.
Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.
And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
for I am suffering torment in these flames.'
Abraham replied, 'My child,
remember that you received what was good during your lifetime
while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established
to prevent anyone from crossing
who might wish to go from our side to yours
or from your side to ours.'
He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him
to my father's house,
for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.'
But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.'
He said, 'Oh no, father Abraham,
but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
Then Abraham said,
'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded
if someone should rise from the dead.'"

The Gospel of the Lord.
โ—Ž Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

์˜ˆ๋ฌผ ๊ธฐ๋„  Prayer over the Gifts

Lord,
Help us to keep this Lenten season holy through this offering,
And let us not be content with external observance of the commandments,
But bring about a deep conversion of heart.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen.

๊ฐ์‚ฌ์†ก  Preface
<  Preface 1 for Lent : The Spiritual Meaning of the Season of Lent >

It is truly right and our duty to give you thanks and praise,
at all times and in all places,
through our Lord Jesus Christ.

For you have so loved the world
that you gave your only Son,
born of the Virgin Mary,
to die for our sins and rise again for our justification.

By his death he has destroyed our death,
and by his rising to life he has restored us to life.

And so, with the angels and archangels,
with the thrones and dominions,
with the principalities and powers,
and with all the heavenly hosts,
we sing the hymn of your glory without end:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Amen.

์˜์„ฑ์ฒด์†ก  Communion Antiphon      Ps 119(118):1

์˜์„ฑ์ฒด ํ›„ ๊ธฐ๋„  Prayer after Communion

O God,
By the power of this holy sacrifice,
May we constantly practice good works,
And so bring about the kingdom of God.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen.

๋ฐฑ์„ฑ์„ ์œ„ํ•œ ๊ธฐ๋„  Prayer for the People
<  May be said freely. >

Lord,
Look with favor upon your people who ask for your help,
And protect and guide them by your power.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen. …….

์˜ค๋Š˜์˜ ๋ฌต์ƒ  Today's Meditation

The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus In the parable, there is no explicit mention of the rich man committing injustice, cheating others, or amassing wealth through dishonest means. However, the description of him "living in luxury every day" suggests that he may have misused his wealth. From a modern perspective where spending money is often seen as a virtue, it may be difficult to consider his lifestyle as deserving of suffering in hell.
However, the rich man did commit a grave sin: indifference. He could have seen Lazarus' plight with little effort, and his heart would have likely been moved. Yet, he turned his attention solely to himself and his own pleasures. In fact, the rich man likely knew Lazarus was there, but he chose to ignore him as someone irrelevant. This cold indifference is his sin. Pope Francis emphasizes that this culture of indifference, prevalent in modern society, is the opposite of God's love.
To overcome this indifference, the Church must open its doors and turn its gaze to the reality of the poor. We cannot be content with staying within the Church and living comfortably with those like us. We must go out to spread love. It is when we go out, getting dirty and wounded, that we experience the work of the Holy Spirit. Just as Lazarus was at the door, as soon as we open the doors of the Church and go out, we will encounter the Lazaruses of our time. Their reality will touch our hearts, and our compassion and empathy for them will lead us to acts of love. It is in this small, first step of opening the door that great miracles will happen.
